Preparing for Debate: Should we Keep Time Zones or Get Rid of Them Completely?

Today in class, Mr. Schick brought back the discussion our class was having about time zones about whether they were actually useful or not, and turned it into a debate project. We must gather evidence to support either why time zones should stay or go. He made three groups for us to start in. We could be in the group that is supporting the idea of time zones being useful and staying, another group supporting the idea of why we don't need time zones and why it should go, and a group that is undecided. This group gathers reasoning to support both sides, and when we debate on Friday, they will end up making a decision. I chose to start in the undecided group for now as I gather my thoughts and think of which idea makes more sense to me. So far, here are some pieces of evidence I gathered for the claims:

The world should continue to use time zones and not get rid of them-
  • "Without time zones, time is never ambiguous, but how do we know at what time it would be appropriate to call another country?" Setting the clock at a Universal time wouldn't change the fact that the sun sets and rises at different times around the world. It just makes more sense to correlate the time on the sun, so that when you make a phone call across the globe, you know what time to call.
  • "Imagine getting off a plane in a foreign country, it's dark, okay, what time is it? 4pm. Well, that's not very helpful. Is the sun about to rise... or maybe it just set? Is it the middle of the night or early evening? Time that is independent of the movement of the sun of the current location loses all of its meaning. Further context will always be needed to know what time of day it actually is." You will always need more information on what time it really is in another country, because saying that it is the same time everywhere isn't going to help you when traveling, working, socializing, etc.; it will only make it more complicating. People will still have to do the math to figure out what the time it is in another country because they're going to want to compare it to theirs- where you get up at a certain time, eat at a certain time, sleep at a. certain time, etc.

The world should abolish time zones and get rid of them-
  • "For starters, no more needing to coordinate time zones every time you travel or speak with people in a different time zone." Having one, shared, Universal time would allow everyone to talk about something with one time attached to it, for anywhere in the world. You would know the numerical time is everywhere, and not just where you're from.
  • "The big benefit of abolishing time zones would be flexibility. Businesses and individuals could have more freedom to plan their days." Planning events and  parties would be easier because there is one time. Plus, people could get there on time.
