I Wasn't In Class Today

   I wasn't in class today because I had to go to a basketball game. However, today was the Mesopotamia quiz day so I came into his class during 2nd mod and took my quiz the same time the SuperWesternCiv class took their quiz. I thought the quiz was easy because I looked over my notes yesterday and had a good understanding of the topics we were discussing. I think I got an A on it.

Class Review

   Today in class, we had a little review on the unit we've been working on. My shadow was very involved in the conversation and answering questions. This was interesting to see because usually shadows don't participate as much. Anyways, Mr. Schick told us that even though our middle school teachers might have told us that using Wikipedia is terrible, he thinks that is a great source to use and that the information on it comes from many websites/articles. Mr. Schick told us that Wikipedia is a very thorough and a mainly accurate source to use, but would never be cited as a primary source on research because encyclopedias can never be a primary source for research!! Then, he talked about the struggles of writing research papers in college because he had to use a typewriter. If you forgot to add even one paragraph, you would have to re-write the whole thing. Alexander the Great and his Horse, Bucephalus

   The bond between Alexander the Great and his horse, Bucephalus, was very special. Bucephalus was a large, black stallion who was presented to Alexander's father, King Phillip II in 346 BCE by Philonecus of Thessaly, for a price of 13 talents. This price was 3 times the normal amount at the time! However, this horse was taller than the normal Macedonian horse and was described as "too wild and unmanageable". Because of this, King Phillip ordered it away, but Alexander insisted that he would pay for the horse himself if he couldn't tame it. Everyone laughed at him because they thought that he would definitely fail at this. However, young Alexander came up to the horse and realized that it was actually afraid of it's own shadow! So, Alexander pointed the horse toward the sun in order to get the horse's shadow behind it. While the horse was facing the sun, Alexander mounted it. Ancient Greece Architecture

   This is the Temple of Hera in Olympia. This temple was built in 590 BC to honor Hera, the queen of Greek goddesses. The architectural style of this temple was called Doric (see picture below), and consisted of 16 columns. The lower part of the temple was made out of limestone while the upper part was built using mud bricks and terra-cotta tiles. Back in Ancient Greece, when it was still new (and not destroyed), the Temple of Hera consisted of three rooms. Two of these rooms contained statues of Zeus and Hara. However, the temple was later demolished by an earthquake in the fourth century AD.    This is the Parthenon in Acropolis. It was built in 447 BC and dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom. The Parthenon was built after the Greek's victory over the Persians, as a way to celebrate their win.
