Plato's Allegory of the Cave Video

   Today in class, we watched a video on the deeper meaning of The Allegory of the Cave. Basically, we spent all our class (which was shortened to 45 minutes today) watching a 6 minute video. This is because we were playing Mr. Schick's famous game "okay, stop". He was asking us many questions during the video and stopped it to say something important, or say what stands out in the video. I took notes on this just in case there are going to be quiz/test questions on it, and I found the ideas that were being expressed very interesting. One thing the narrator pointed out was that no one chooses to be in the "cave", we just start out there. This leads into the idea that everyone has the potential to reach the "sunlight", where you can start discovering/learning new things, and can start gaining wisdom. The prisoner was enlightened by the sun. He found what real creatures/beings look like, and not just silhouettes him and the other prisoners thought to be real. He recognized nature in its beauty, and it opened up his eyes to his real morals and values. As said in the video, "The cave-dwellers are humans before philosophy...the sun is the light of reason." This means that we all start out as cave-dwellers, but can find the sun and find the light that brightens the best side of ourselves. (Correlating to the philosopher, Socrates) The Socratic Method was used in order for people to think for themselves and be the best versions of themselves. All in all, Plato's insight to the story, The Allegory of the Cave, is that we don't need to end up in the cave we started out in. (We are all capable of greatness).

Thoughts on Mr. Schick's Blog

   On yesterday's Western Civ. blog post, Mr. Schick posted a bunch of his thoughts on aspects of cyber school. One thing he mentioned in his list was accountability. During this time away from our regular school environment, we are finding that students really need to step up by focusing on doing our assignments with our 100% effort, by realizing the importance of doing our own work, and trying our hardest to manage our time so that we get our work done efficiently. I would completely agree with this. From my point of view, I am finding it harder to get my work done efficiently. Not only do we have an increased workload of schoolwork, but we have to give it our all and try our best on these assignments, with all the difficulties surrounding us. To be completely honest, I find myself wanting to just look up the answers to my work, but then I realize that I need to truly understand the subject/topic we're learning.
